About Us: The Department of Marathi was established in 1963. The department has two full time faculty members and at the final year the average class strength ranges from 30-35 who specialize in the subject of Marathi. Marathi being the regional language the department ensures that students acquire the requisite expertise in the linguistic skills and communication skills. The faculty members strive hard to impart value education through the course work that they teach.
Faculty Profile: Dr Sneha Deuskar, HOD M.A; B.Ed; SET; Ph.D. Actively involved in curriculum development. Excellent academic record. She completed her Ph D in 2005 and has a minor research project to her credit. She has attended several seminars and presented papers at National and state level seminars. Mrs N M Kulkarni, M.A; SET; M.Phil. Excellent academic record, IQAC member, She has attended several seminars and presented papers. The staff members are involved in the activities of the Marathi Wagmaya Mandal which conducts intra and intercollegiate activities annually.
Changes made in the syllabus: The syllabus is revised every three years. The faculty members give formal and informal suggestions to the member Board of Studies. The faculty also participates in curriculum related workshops.
Student Profile: The department maintains the profile of individual student. 59% of the students come from economically weaker section of the society. 68 % of the students are from reserved category. Many of them take up part time jobs to continue with their education. The parents are not educated and many of them are first generation learners. The students are of average competencies. Even though they come from Marathi medium they have to be trained since they are acquainted with dialect and are not well versed with the standard version of Marathi (Pramanbhasha).
Trends in Success and drop out rates of students: The success rate of the students in the past five years is above 95%. The drop out rate is negligible mainly due to the extra care taken by the faculty members. They counsel the students and also educate the parents during parent meetings. Students are evaluated regularly by way of weekly tests, preliminary examinations. The department collects a formal feedback from the students.
Learning Resources of the Department: In addition to the books in the central library the department has a departmental library with 100 books and four periodicals. CD’s related to Marathi literature are also made available to the students. The department has three computer’s (shared with Hindi Department) with Akruti (Marathi software). Modern teaching methods: Besides regular class room teaching, the faculty members innovate new teaching methods regularly. Curriculum related interactive sessions are arranged. Value education is imparted through short stories, drama, novels, poem etc. Some of the issues which are addressed are gender equality, socio economic equality, humanity, compassion, cultural unity, eradication of superstition etc. Values are imparted by taking the students for a visit to orphanages, participating in adult education (at their residential places). For effective understanding of the course content and the form of literature, role plays are practised. Film shows are organised, based on saints and eminent leaders. Through the Marathi Wangmaya Mandal authors, poets, artists, directors, writers are invited to interact with the students. The department organises interdepartmental activity and environment education is imparted through these activities. Some of the eminent personalities who have been invited are Hon Vice Chancellor Pune University Dr Narendra Jadhav ( former RBI chief), Mr Prashant Dalvi, (Dramatist), Ms Vidya Bal ( Social worker), Ms Swati Chitnis (Theatre Artist), Mr Mukund Tanksale (Comedy writer). The department organised an interactive session with an author Dr. Sisilia Carvalov “Lekhak aplya bhetila” in collaboration with University of Mumbai. The department organises several competitions to enhance various skills among the students. Some of these are report writing (curriculum based), Sahitya Chitra Vedha, (picture illustration of topics related to curriculum), “Late Shri Jugaldas Modi Intercollegiate Marathi Elocution Competition”, wall paper ‘Aaviskaar’is published weekly by the students of the department of Marathi. The department organises an intercollegiate elocution competition.
Participation of teachers in academic and personal counselling of students: Both staff members are available for interaction with the students after class room teaching. Weaker students are given extra coaching and they are also counseled so that they do not develop inferiority complex. The teachers also take help of the professional counselor to organise workshops for the students. A tutor ward system has been evolved and one teacher takes care of fifteen students.
Faculty development programs: The institution encourages faculty to participate in various faculty development programs. Both faculty members have completed orientation course with an ‘A’ grade and one of them has completed a refresher course. The faculty members attend workshops related to curriculum, writing of research proposal. In the last six years Prof Deuskar has attended 22 seminars and workshops. She has also presented papers at State and National level seminars. Prof Kulkarni has attended 16 seminars and workshops and also has presentation to her credit.
Contribution of teachers to the academic activities (Teaching, consultancy and Research: Both staff members are actively involved in teaching and research activities. Dr Sneha Deuskar after completion of her Ph D in 2005 successfully completed a UGC sponsored minor research project in 2007. Prof N M Kulkarni obtained her M Phil degree in 2003. They are invited to deliver lectures at various forums, both are recognized postgraduate teachers and they deliver lectures for the benefit of PG students of the University department. They have published articles and written book reviews.
Placement record of students: Students after completing their graduation with specialization in Marathi language pursue B.Ed., post graduation, journalism. They have been placed as teachers and one of them is heading an institution. One of them has started his own coaching class. Some of them are journalist. Many students are in the Government service including the police force.
Contribution of the department to aid placement: The staff members guide students regarding various career opportunities available to them. A workshop on “careers” is organised by the department. The department is also recognized to register students for the M A program and library facilities are extended to these students. |
