Changes made in the syllabus Computer Science is a changing field, in view of that the syllabus has undergone three revisions and the faculty have contributed richly to these changes. Curriculum based workshop have been organized by the department at UG and PG level to orient teachers of our and other colleges to the newly introduced topics which are in keeping with the demands of the growing IT sector.
Student Profile Being a professional course there is demand for securing admission in this course. Most of the students are those who have secured first class at the XII Science. The major problem with our student is most of them are from vernacular medium, so technically they are highly skilled but when it comes to communication and written skills they take a back seat. They also come from economically weaker section of the society. The management provides them with free ships; they are allowed to pay fees in convenient installments, book bank and reading room facilities. Since many of them cannot afford to buy computers the labs are kept open for extended timings so that they utilize the department facilities. The department takes all efforts to help the students to overcome these shortcomings.
Trends in success and drop out rates The department from the time of inception has produced excellent results. The department is privileged to have the University topper in Computer Science in the year 2002 the very first batch. The department students have also made it to the merit list in the years 2006-2007 and 2007-2008, bagging the second and third merit ranks respectively. The support extended by the faculty and close interaction with the students ensures that the drop out rate is nil.
Learning Resources The computer labs are well equipped with latest configuration and required software’s. There are two dedicated labs, one for UG and other for PG. In addition there is a server room. Students and staff have access to internet facility. There is a departmental library and books are also available on current card which is managed by the members of the support staff. The department also utilizes the services of students who are working on “Earn while you learn scheme”. There are more than 3000 books in the Library. Every year books worth Rs.50,000/- are added.
Book Bank We have excellent facility called as book bank. Under this, we provide all the necessary books in the syllabi to individual students and also allot some books in groups. Students can choose the books. Students have to return these books at the end of the academic year. This helps the students in maximizing their potential. Every year, according to necessity, we add books to the book bank also. At present this facility is for T.Y.B.Sc, M.Sc Part I & M.Sc Part II and we may extend it to other classes in course of time.
Project Guidance There are different types of projects in the B.Sc and M.Sc curriculum. Three members guide the project for Graphics for about 48 S.Y.B.Sc Students. One staff member guides the projects for T.Y.B.Sc SSAD/OOAD projects. Two members guide for Web designing project. Four Teachers guide M.Sc students for their project work.
Modern ICT enabled Teaching Methods Almost all lectures are ICT enabled. The class rooms and Labs have LCD and laptops. Some of the lectures are coupled with practical training to make the session more meaningful. Invited faculty are drawn from industry to bridge the gap between industry and academia. Teachers are available for problem solving. The final year classes commence earlier so that the syllabus is completed in time. Students are provided with study material and handouts. There is continuous evaluation of students in the form of weekly test, quiz, and seminars.
Participation of teachers in academic and personal counseling There is excellent rapport among the staff and students. Teachers interact freely with students and help them in problem solving and guidance of projects. Since students are from economically weaker section of the society and parents are not educated they depend on the teachers for academic and emotional counseling. Sessions are organized for the students on stress management; confidence building and these are conducted by the professional counselor of the college.
Events The department organizes an annual inter collegiate technical festival “Tech Aura” where both technical and non technical events are present. The department arranges for the sponsors of the event. Students from various colleges participate in the events. The department also organizes an intra collegiate gaming festival “Gaming Galaxy” where students of S.Y.B.Sc CS code the games in C language. The department also organizes an industrial visit for the T.Y.B.Sc and M.Sc Students.
Faculty development program Staff members are encouraged to participate in workshops and seminars. They are also encouraged to update their knowledge by undergoing special training. The department conducts training programme for the members of non teaching and teaching staff. The department conducts two UGC career oriented Add on courses namely Web designing and Hardware maintenance. Students with the help of staff members have developed software’s for the college to maintain attendance, provident fund etc. The web page was initially developed by the members of the department. The department also assists the service engineers to maintain all the computers of the college which are increasing every day. The department also provides technical assistance whenever needed.
Research Two staff members are pursuing their M Phil degree and some of them are engaged in consultancy work for industries.
Placements The department has excellent placement record and almost all the students are placed. Our students are placed in the top IT companies. One staff member takes care of placement.
