Department of HINDI

 

About Us:

The Hindi Department was started in 1963 with the establishment of the college. The department has about 350 students at the undergraduate level and 163 students at the P G level. The Department also has the permission for registering students for Ph D. The department has maintained good academic records with an average rate of 98% at UG level with large numbers passing with a first class and 83% at PG level.  Students graduating with Hindi major pursue B.Ed. and take up teaching profession. Some of them are in media print and television and others are self employed. And some also take up careers in journalism.

 

Faculty Profile:

The sanctioned strength of the department is two, of which one position is vacant from January 2008. Efforts are being made to fill it up by the coming academic year.

Dr. M. P. Singh, former HOD. M A, Ph D. Research guide for doctoral studies in Hindi. He was the Chairman Board of Studies in Hindi, member,   faculty of Arts, research recognition committee, syllabus committee and Academic Council. Chief Editor of college magazine “Harmony”.

Dr. (Mrs.) Mithilesh Sharma, Lecturer: M.A., Ph. D.  She is recognized to teach PG students, Editor College Magazine Harmony. She has successfully completed a research project for Mumbai University and has an ongoing UGC Minor Research Project. She is active in research and presented several papers at seminars and conferences.

Student Profile:

The students are counselled at the time of admission and are given guidance related to the course and the career path for their future growth. Female students outnumber male students. Most  of them being from lower income group and with average academic performance. Most of the students are first generation learners.

 

Learning resources of the department:

The department has a main library which consists of around 10000 books, apart from journals, periodicals, CD’s, and other reference material.  The Hindi study centre library has around 200 books.  The Hindi centre has three  computer’s,  internet connectivity and a laptop. Computer’s have Akruti font for Hindi typing. 

 

Modern teaching methods practiced and use of ICT in teaching - learning:

The department believes in student centered teaching. Teachers explicitly request and encourage questions from students. Teachers use the board to reinforce their points visually. Teachers conduct a midterm course review for feedback to understand the knowledge of students. The students are encouraged to take part in seminars, elocutions and discussions to make them understand the topic better. To aid the students further in their career growth, the teacher guides the students for story writing competition, advertisement making, Media related Reporting, Interviewing, Translation techniques etc. Students are also given audio/video presentations of Poets and Authors to understand their academic topics better. Students are encouraged to enroll for computer courses and get trained on internet browsing, sending and receiving emails, printing documents etc.

 

Participation of teachers in academic and personal counselling of students:

The students profile provides enough information about the academic, socio-economic status of the students. The faculty members are available for the major part of the day. There is excellent rapport between the teachers and the students, so the students approach the teacher freely for personal counselling, academic needs and assistance for Projects and Seminars.

 

Details of faculty development programmes and teachers who have been benefited during the past two years:

Teachers have organized and participated in several seminars and conferences at State and National level. The department has organized seminars sponsored by UGC and Hindi Sahitya Academy.  In collaboration with Central Hindi Institute, Agra and the University of Mumbai, the department organized a National Seminar on “A Renaissance and Indian Languages” to mark the Sesqui–Centennial celebrations of University of Mumbai. The three day National conference was inaugurated by great critic and reputed signature in Hindi Literature, Dr. Natwar Singh.

 

Participation/Contribution of teachers to the academic activities including teaching, consultancy and research:

 The Department has one research guide; five students are registered for their doctoral degree in Hindi. Students are guided to undertake and complete their project work. The department has research project work providing a research ambience to the student. In spite of the heavy teaching assignment, the faculty also participates actively in the activities of WDC and NSS which includes assistance at the NSS outdoor camps.

 

Collaboration with other departments/institutions, at the State, National and International levels and their outcome during the past two years:

The department has an Association named “Hindi Sahitya Parishad”.  Every year Intercollegiate Competitions are organized by the department on various topics, which are attended by famous and eminent personalities. The students also enthusiastically participate and make the event successful. Teachers from various departments from the college, come together to participate and help in organizing the events. Teachers from the department take PG lectures at the University of Mumbai.

 

Priority areas for Research and details of the ongoing projects, important and noteworthy publications of the faculty, during past two years:

The department is a recognized centre for doctoral research. One project has been completed and there is one UGC sponsored ongoing project which is on the impact of globalization on our National language.
