Department of Statistics

 

About Us:

The department of statistics was established in 1981 and is now a leading department involved in educating students in Science and Commerce streams. Many staff members are involved in interdepartmental teaching both at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

 

Faculty Profile:

 There are five staff members in the department.

Prof Rajendra L Amdekar M Sc. Head of the department has 27 years of teaching experience.  Teaches Mathematical & Statistics Techniques and is an expert in Statistics Hypothesis, Parametric and Non-Parametric Testing Econometrics, Operation Research, and Simulation Models. He has worked for the cause of teachers and non teaching staff and is currently elected member of the local managing committee of the college.      

Prof (Mrs)  Jayashree  Vasant  Vaze M Sc Lecturer selection grade has 24 years of teaching experience and is an expert in operational research, estimation and probability.  Contributed significantly as the chairperson of cultural association for four years.

Prof. Ajit Prabhakar Limaye M Sc. Lecturer selection grade has 24 years of teaching experience. Visiting lecturer at Hiray college for MCA students. Member of Constitution committee, Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). Professor incharge of cricket in the college for the last two decades. Has been the Examination Incharge for the last four years.

Mrs.  Chhaya Sambaprasad Pinge M Sc. Lecturer Selection grade has 17 years of experience in teaching. specialised in descriptive   Statistics ,sampling and design of experiments, biostatistics and Operations Research. Involved in interdepartmental teaching and analysis of data.

Mrs Rajeshree Raut M Sc SET. Lecturer. Teaches to the Commerce as well as science students. Involved in interdepartmental teaching and is very popular at it. Some of the course taught are BSc and MSc (Biotechnology) :Biostatistics,2) MSc (Computer Science)part I: Simulation, Models.3) MSc (Computer Science)part II:Optimisation.4) BMS :(Quantitative Methods in Business at FY and SY) 5) BBI:(Quantitative Techniques infFY).

   
Changes made in the courses:

Syllabus for TYBSc Applied Component (Computer programming and system analysis) was changed w.e.f June 2006. New topics like RDBMS, SQL, JAVA and Networking were introduced to make the course industry oriented.  The revised syllabus for FYBSc will be implemented from the academic year 2008-2009. Prof Chhaya Pinge is the member of the syllabus committee for FYBSc. Prof Rajeshree Raut attended the workshop cum training courses for RDBMS, SQL, JAVA and Networking

 

Trends in the success and drop out rates of the students: The passing percentage for the academic year 2005 –2006 was 80%.  and that for the academic year 2006-2007 was 75% .

The percentage of first classes increased from 16%   in the year 2005-2006 to 30% in the year -2007.There has been not a single dropout in the last two years.

 

Learning Resources of the Department:

Library: The department has a full fledged and self contained library. It contains books on all the essential topics catering to the needs of the students. It is maintained and updated at regular intervals of time by our lab attendant. At present the library contains 120 books on Statistics and 60 books on Computer programming.

Computers: The students have access to the computer laboratory. In addition the department has h 7 computers in the statistics lab for practicing  during extra hours. Internet facility is available in the department.  The students are divided into batches and they   practise  without affecting the regular time table. The laboratory is  air conditioned.

 

Modern teaching methods:

 Power Point presentations on some topics. Presentation by students on topics like functions in SQL and C programming.  Interactive sessions   are carried out between teachers and students. OHP is used for overall preview of certain topics. Regular periodical tests and assignments are conducted after completion of every topic.

 

Participation of teachers in academic and personal counselling of students:

A phone chain between students and teachers is maintained so that interaction with parents regarding the students performance is done on a regular basis.

Academic Counselling is done on personal as well departmental level. Guest lectures on new avenues in statistics are conducted. Personal attention and care is given to students whenever the need arises. Students are also advised to contact the student counselor.

 

Faculty development Programmes:

The department organised a training program in C programming under the auspices of University of Mumbai. All the members of the department participated in the training and acquired the required computing skills to teach the topic.  Prof Jayashree   Vaze  attended  the UGC refresher course in Population Studies and Demography  held by International  Institute for Population Studies from May 15 to June 2,2006.  

Prof Chhaya Pinge  attended the following refresher courses: Business Mathematics ( 28-02-05 to 21 –03-05); Probability and its application ( 19-11-07 to 08-12-07) held by maths Dept of University of Mumbai. 

 Prof Rajeshree Raut attended the the following wokshop cum training programmes

 1) JAVA programing  at Vartak College ( 02-05-2006 to 06-05-2006)

 2) RDBMS and SQL  at Kirti college  (13-06-2006 to 16-06-2006)

 3) Networking  at  Mithibai college (19-06-2006 to 20-06-2006)

 

Participation / Contribution of teachers to academic activities including, teaching, consultancy and research:

Prof Ajit Limaye  is member for SYBSC syllabus commiittee .

Prof Chhaya Pinge  is member for FYBSc. syllabus committee.

Inputs are provided by the teachers and they see to it that necessary actions  are taken to

Introduce   industry  oriented courses for the benefit of the students.

 

Collaboration with other departments/Institutions:

Assistance and guidance  is provided to departments like BMS, BBI, Biotechnology and Computer Science on topics like statistical  techniques, optimization and Simulation models. They also conduct lectures in Environment audit and train students in biostatistics for the Olympiad training program.

 

Priority Areas for Research and details of the ongoing projects

Prof Jayashree Vaze has received a Minor research project of UGC on“Women Enterpreneurships – Emerging Visionaries “in the year 2007- 2008.
