About Us: The Department of B.Com Banking and Insurance (BBI) at Ramniranjan Jhunjhunwala College, Ghatkopar (W), Mumbai, was established in the academic year 2005-06. In the emerging LPG (Liberalization, Privatisation and Globalization) environment and with the increasing dynamism of risk and growth of professional risk management, the Banking and Insurance device has become more and more important and popular. The rapidly changing business and technological environment has created a need to identify likely sources of future risks in banking and insurance business. In this changing scenario, banks and insurance sector need to be aware of not only the operational aspects but also the widening range of products, risk management aspects, marketing strategies to leverage the enlarged scope of banking and insurance business. All this has resulted in a sudden spurt in the demand for banking and insurance professionals. This course of BBI may shoulder some responsibility in creating these professionals. The Department of BBI started this course in the academic year 2005-2006 (NO.6547, Dated 30-12-2004). At present, our first batch has appeared for the semester VI examination with a 100% pass in the semester V.

Learning Resources of the Department: The Department of BBI has a departmental library with books, periodicals. The students make use of the departmental library as well as the college library for their studies and project preparation. The department has 5 desktops, 1 laptop and 1 OHP. Students make presentations (individual/group) on the various topics related to the subject. Students prepare charts on various topics for display. Special practice lectures in the subject of computers are conducted along with the regular lectures. The department is proud to say that it has recently signed an MOU with ICIC learning Matrix to bridge the gap between industry and academia.
Evaluation: At F.Y. BBI and S.Y. BBI level, the assessment of 100 marks is divided into two parts viz. 60 marks for external evaluation and 40 marks for internal evaluation. For internal evaluation, we conduct class tests, group presentations on different topics, dialogue sessions to develop communication and marketing skills, presentation of case studies, etc. External evaluation of 60 marks is conducted in the form of written examination. At the T.Y. BBI level, the students work on projects worth 100 marks on Banking and Insurance related topics for the 5th and 6th semesters respectively. We conduct mock viva in the department to create confidence in them to face the viva-voce examination by the external examiner.
Students Profile: Students have to possess the minimum qualification of (10+2) as per the University guidelines. Majority of our students come from middle Class and come from vernacular medium. About 96% are from commerce stream, 3% from science stream and 1% from other streams. About 41% students are Girls and 59% students are Boys. The college enjoys Minority Status in respect of Hindi and Gujarati Linguistic background.
Placement records: Large number of companies visited the college for campus recruitments.
