Department of Commerce and Accountancy

 

About Us:

The Commerce faculty has the departments of Accountancy and Commerce including Business Law. Its functioning is enhanced by the co-operation and the coordination of other departments viz. English, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics and Geography and integration of various Arts and Science departments through the foundation course. The Commerce department was established in 1981. However due to the enormous demand from the students to pursue commerce the college has also started two self financing courses in the Commerce faculty namely B Com Banking and Insurance and BacheloriiniManagementiStudiesi(BMS).


Faculty Profile:

Accountancy department: There are four members in the faculty all are fully qualified with excellent academic records.

Prof. Dipak Parikh HOD. B Com; C A; Practising Chartered Accountant. Lecturer Selection grade. He provides students with job training in Accounting, taxation. He is one of the guest faculties for commercial accounting for Sale tax officers training programs. Chairman of Accountancy association.

Prof Saraswathy Moorthy. M Com, SET, NET submitted dissertation for Ph D degree. Lecturer selection  grade. Guest faculty for teaching M Com students. Actively participates in Career and Counselling activities and talent search among students.

Prof Jeetendranath Jha M Com, SET. Lecturer selection grade. Active participation in extension activities of the students specially N S S as a programme officer.

Prof Vilas Karpe M Com, C A SET, practising Chartered Accountant,  visiting Faculty at the B.M.S. Course, conducted by the University of Mumbai, TVC Institute of Management , Mulund, Jamanalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Management Development Programme, Mumbai.  He provides student with part time jobs in his firm.

Commerce department:

Prof Vilasini Patkar M Com D H E submitted dissertation for Ph D degree. Lecturer Selection Grade. Visiting faculty for M.Com. and MMS Courses. Active researcher, chairperson of Commerce Association. Published research papers in various journals, co-authored books.

Business Law

Prof Neha Sajanani ( Lecture basis). Visiting faculty in Management Institutions.

 

Student profile:

As in other faculties students are from lower socio economic category of the society and many of them are from vernacular medium. The class size is large and the student teacher ratio is high. Most of the students work either part time or full time. Proximity to the local train station and convenient timing enables the working students to register for undergraduate program in commerce.

 

Trends in student success and drop out rates: 

 Even though the students are working, the results of the department are always more than University results and it has been improving every year both quantitatively and qualitatively. The drop out rates are negligible.

 

Modern teaching methods and use of ICT in teaching:

Teaching is student centered. Teachers facilitate the learning process and encourage self learning among the students. Teachers encourage students to read and discuss current aspects in finance and business. The subject matter is taught by giving due emphasis about the recent economic, technological and political changes. Guest lectures by eminent personalities are organised. Students participate in seminars and various competitions. Creativity is kindled through activities such as Ad-Mad show, Commerce Quiz. Computer usage is an integral part of learning. In addition, students are taught special packages like Tally. Industrial visits are organised to give them a practical orientation.

 

Participation of teachers in academic and personal counselling of the students:

The members of the department advise students and counsel those regarding higher studies and career opportunities. The students are motivated to participate in inter and intra collegiate competitions. Most of the sportsperson in the college are from commerce faculty.

 

Priority Area of research and noteworthy publications:

All teachers regularly attend workshops, seminars and conferences. They are members of professional bodies. Two teachers registered for their Ph D degree after the previous NAAC accreditation and have submitted their work for the award of the degree. The priority areas of research are Direct marketing, Khadi and village industries.

 

Student placements and departmental support:

As mentioned earlier majority of the students are working so they get promoted after graduation. Some of them come forward for campus recruitment and have been placed in banks like HDFC, ICICI, Citibank, and Deutsche bank. Financial companies like J P Morgan also conduct campus recruitments. Along with their undergraduate studies students take up the entrance for the CA/ICWA examinations and some students progress for higher education like M Com but top on the popularity list is a Master in Business Administration (MBA), Diploma in Management Courses.

 

Contribution of the faculty to changes made in course or programmes:

The faculty members attend the workshop organised for curriculum update and implementation. In the subject of Accountancy students are provided with problem booklet as a ready reckoner.

 

Learning resources:

The library is well stocked with books and text books covering a wide range of topics. In addition, students are encouraged to read newspaper like Business line and Economic Times. The students have a choice of choosing electives like Export marketing, Direct and Indirect Tax and Computer Applications. In addition they have the option of taking up certificate courses run by the college in web designing, functional English, Travel and Tourism, tally to name a few of them. Students from the economically privileged section of the society are provided with text books.
